Evolon® CR is a versatile, high-quality nonwoven made of countless microfilaments. In addition to its properties as a wet or dry cleaning nonwoven, Evolon® CR is offered for isolation or as a separating layer exclusively for restoration and conservation and distributed by Deffner & Johann.
In painting conservation, the potential of Evolon® CR for removing varnish from oil paintings was recognized quite soon. As a result, prior to the restoration of the painting "The Night Watch" (Rembrandt van Rijn, 1642, oil on canvas), the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam conducted a study that looked more closely at the properties of this special microfiber fleece as a cleaning medium.
The aim oft he study was an improved understanding and optimized use of Evolon CR for varnish removal. The chemical stability of Evolon® CR towards organic solvents and the physical process of solvent uptake and release during controlled loading of the nonwoven were investigated. In addition, the effects of the treatment on the coating layer during and after implementation were also to be considered.
The evaluation of the study showed that Evolon® CR can be used as a safe medium for varnish removal and is chemically and physically stable to organic solvents when exposed on timescales that are typical in conservation practice.
Compared to conventional cleaning media, e.g. cotton swabs, the main advantages of Evolon® CR are the significant limitation of solvent expansion and the reduction of mechanical impact on the paint surface during cleaning.
In addition to its advantages for painting conservation, Evolon® CR can also be used excellently to clean and to protect sensitive surfaces, as it is dimensionally stable and tear-resistant. The fabric can be used in sheets of any size and can be individually adapted to the object by sewing, gluing or welding. After usage, the fleece is washable up to 95 °C and can be reused without any problems. Evolon® CR is produced without solvents and binders and is pvc-free.
